Smug - Portrait of Barry Dick
Sam Bates, aka Smug, is an Australian born artist based in Glasgow. He is known world-wide for his photo-realistic murals. He achieves incredibly realistic portraits through the use of spray paint. Smug’s iconic work can be found all around the world.
This portrait of Barry Dick is the third Smug piece in Tumby Bay. We feel very privileged that he has returned to Tumby Bay so many times. Smug has developed very close and lifelong friendships with many members of the Tumby Bay community.
Barry Dick is a much loved local identity. Smug met Barry and took photos of him to work from. The entire portrait was created using only spray cans. Barry did not know that this honour was being paid to him until the piece was almost completed on the third day. He was quite overwhelmed when he saw it. The community is very proud of this portrait.
