Andrew is an Australian artist and you could describe his work as a social conscience which has a message relating to an issue that was in the media at the time. When this was painted there was a lot of discussion about the need to cull sharks so his message was that they are the apex predator in the ocean, and can we really imagine and ocean without them? This piece was the first of a series of conservation pieces Andrew did around Australia. It is an incredible piece when you consider how he has put the sharks at an angle to emphasise their size and shape. It is painted with aerosols and has amazing shading and the skin tones. Look at from a distance and then move in to look closely at the details such as the teeth, the skin shading and the way it all comes together. The colour in the background with the paint splatter gives it an ocean feel and makes the sharks stand out from the wall.
