Shawn Lu

Tumby Bay, South Australia 5605

Shawn Lu is a Melbourne artist and all of his work is extremely intricate and mimics wood cut prints. The whole mural is done with really fine brushes. Look at the detail and think how many brush strokes it would have taken. Some of the brushes only had a couple of bristles. This mural had the most hours spent on it because of the detail. This work is based on an 1891 Ukrainian painting by Ilya Repin of Ukrainian Cossacks writing a letter to the then invaders in the 1600s. Shawn has put an Australian spin on it, painting the South Australian farmers writing to the Australian Government about the farmers on the River Murray in NSW and Victoria using all the water before it comes to South Australia. This was a topical piece relevant to the time it was painted.
